Tax Reclaim -- Moving Abroad

Hi All

Newbie here so take it easy on me

I moved to Berlin last September and became a German tax payer. Do you know if I am able to claim any tax back from the UK Tax office as I didn't finish the tax year. Do they charge a minimum tax based on a full financial year which I didn't stay for or some. I know there are some thresholds and tax free amounts. Never really paid that much attention when working in the UK as it all came out of my paycheck and was done by my company.

I worked as an employee in a company before, not self employed.

Hope this question makes some sort of sense, if not please feel free to ask me to explain myself.

Thanks
Steve

It depends on how long you are going to be out of the UK for. If you are going to be out at least until 5 April 2010, then you will be regarded as non resident and will be due a refund of tax and there will be no UK tax to pay on your German earnings. The tax free allowance for the last tax year was 6045 and the tax rate above that is 20%.
If you are not going to be out of the UK until 5/4/10, then you will remain resident in the UK and would need to declare your German earnings to HMRC and pay UK tax on them, although you would get credit for any German tax paid.

    Hi Fengirl

Thanks for your quick reply. I'm not planning on returning back to the UK. I am, as far as I know a German resident now.

Can you tell me why I need to wait until 5/4/10? It was last September I stopped paying taxes in the UK and started in GErmany. I also became a resident in Germany too.

Can I claim now for last year's tax? And if so can you tell what I need to do..if you didn't mind

    Thanks
    Steve

Yes, you can claim now as you are certain that you will not return to the UK. You need to download form P85 from www.hmrc.gov.uk and send it to your tax office with your P45.

But we don't know where you are domiciled, if you are not UK domiciled you only get the personal allowance by reporting worldwide income.
