What do I do?

I own my house outright and haven't had a mortgage for a few years. I now need to buy 30% of my moms house so she doesn't face being forced to sell when she is in her 70s. I need to take out a mortgage - where do I start? I don't know if I am first time buyer (doesn't sound right) or a remortgager (still doesn't sound right!) but there doesn't seem to be any other categories! We are still waiting for the valuation but the amount I need to raise will be between 30 & 50K. All advise very very gratefully received.
Thanks

If you are raising the money on your own unmortgaged property then it will be an unencumbered remortgage. If you're unsure of where to start I would speak to a mortgage broker, ask if anyone you know could recommend one to you. I'm a tied advisor but have dealt with many in my role and can honestly say that 99% of the ones I've worked with look after their customers and guide them through the process really well keeping them up to date and explaining exactly what is what.

Have you taken advice that this route is the best course of action for you?
  • I haven't had any advice yet as I don't know of anyone. I would like to talk to someone who can guide me sensibly through this process so I don't end up with something daft and shooting myself in the foot! If I don't know anyone who can recommend one how would I go about finding one?
  • You could go and see your local building society. To be honest, this is pretty straight forward and uncomplicated position that you are in.
