Tax Rebate for 08/09

I have just received a tax rebate for the last year 08/09, I was on Basic Rate (BR) for the entire year. I think they have calculated it wrong.

As I have read, the personal allowance for the 08/09 tax year was £6,035. However the officer who has calculated it, has used the figure of £5,435.

It would seem they have calculated the figures using the figure pre-September 2008 personal allowance increase, where it went up from £5,435 to £6,035.

Am I correct in my logic? And is this usually to be expected from HMRC?

  • I think that you are quite right: HMRC have used the original not the revised amount. They really should know better.

    they should have used 6035
    so your refund should have been 6035 x 20% = 1,207
assuming you are a standard rate tax payer

what were the figures for your earnings and tax deducted and how much did you get back ?

And we can work out what you should have been taxed, but it looks like a mistake has been made

Yes, they've admitted their error and it is being sent for referral.

I wonder how many other times they've managed to get away with this. A lot of people wouldn't even notice or know they were being taxed incorrectly. £120 a go as well!
