Thank you all for the advice. We went out this morning to hand deliver letters to a couple of companies, and also to drop in a completed form at a place (the only one this week) in the local paper that had a vacancy. While we were out we passed the big employment agency and my son went in and they spoke to him for a while and he feels a lot better about things.

They were brutally honest with him, said they had no real work, they possibly only got 12 vacancies a week and about 500 unsolicited CVs which is why they had closed their books to new applicants. There is a chance of a factory job (just waiting for the ring back) and they suggest he takes that and sits out the recession and then looks for a more suitable job maybe in a year or so.

Son is happy that someone has actually explained to him that it isn't him that is a failure it is a general lack of work, I think before he was really disheartened to just get absolutely nothing back from any of his enquries so being told it wasn't just him has really helped. Just being able to talk it through over a cup of tea with an experienced recruiter really helped.

We walked back through a different part of town and was not surprised to see that another of the big agencies had their shutters up and a 'this office is now closed' sign in the window..

Can he do bar work? Its a bit more "casual" (changing hours etc) but it will give him some money, increase confidence, meet new people and perhaps lead to full time work?

All I can say is that he's doing slightly better than my son, who didn't start work on his cv until after his finals had finished. And just as he finished it, he found that an internship he'd been planning to apply for had disappeared off the website he'd seen it on!

Ho hum. He doesn't want to come back home, but recognises that you need money coming in to carry on renting elsewhere.
