You could try on ebay. I sold one of mine years ago but with great difficulty. It was difficult to sell because people thought it bad luck because it was from a failed relationship like it was doomed or something. It was worth about £350 and I ended up getting about £30 for it.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

Sorry to sound contentious (it's not meant aggressively) but s/h it probably was worth nearer £30 - after all that's what it sold for on the secondhand market.
You might have initially paid £350, but it is only worth what someone else is prepared to pay.
Put it on Ebay...there's an audience of millions on there - whatever it sells for, will be 'near as dammit' the current market price for that item.0 -
I paid approx £850 for it but have a valuation certificate for £1250. Should i declare the former or the latter when selling on ebay. Is there any other way I could sell it other than ebay or is this definitely the best way? I ask this as I dont have pc at home or internet.0

You shouldn't sell it on Ebay as a first item, because you won't have any feedback. If you want to sell it on Ebay, sell some smaller value items first to build up some good feedback.
Alternatively, you could sell it at an auction, or to a jeweller. You won't get as much for it, but it's a lot less hassle. It would be a good idea to take it to an independent jeweller first whatever you do & find out what they think of it.0 -
I have a ring, which was valued at over £600 for insurance purposes over 10 years ago
But a local jeweller would only offer £90 cash or £100 in vouchers for his shop
i tried ebay but there wasnt much interest there eitherSee the stars they’re shining brightEverything’s alright tonight0 -
What about these cash converter shops that are spinging up all over the place. You could take it in there and get a price off them. You don't have to sell it to them.0

you could always speak to somone at a local antiques fair ( i know its not old but they do sell a variety of items there) get them to sell it on your behalf and pay them a comission( i paid 10 %) have done this before myself and got much more than i would have selling to a shope etc HTH0

Ask two or three independent jewellers what they would buy it off you for.
Or, why not ditch the ring (the gold is close to worthless at scrap prices anyway) and have the stone(s) reset in something nice like a pendant. You would be surprised how cheap it is to get that done. At least then something nice will have come out of the (I assume) failed relationship.

If you know the original retailer, try there. They must have some experience of these occurences. As other contributors have pointed out, the markups on most jewellery items are very high [remember what Gerald Ratner had to say about his own company's products?], and other than the supplier, shops owe you no goodwill.
It's a really sad situation, but you have now faced reality by asking for advice, so get bold and see what the shop can do for you.0 -
I once knew a lady that wanted to chuck her wedding ring in the canal when her marraige broke down, her mum persuaded her to sell it and she gave the cash to their children.
I would go to second hand jewellers etc and see what they can do, advertise in the free ads maybe?0
