Shift worker getting less holiday than he is entitled too??

My husband is a full time shift worker (40 hrs a week) & his shifts are based on a 3 week rotating pattern covering Mon to Sat - 1 week of nights then 2 weeks of days.
I have just read an employment article stating that the minimum annual holiday entitlement increased from April this year to 5.6 hrs per year, which in his case would be 224hrs.
I understand that this total includes the 8 bank holidays that we have here in the UK.

My husband & none of his many colleagues have always believed that they get 4 weeks (160 hrs) holiday per year, plus any bank holidays that their shift happens to fall on. None of them have been informed of any increased entitlement since April so he is planning on taking it up with his bosses but we are both a bit confused by the bank holiday part of the equation.

Some bank holidays fall on a day that he is supposed to be working & when this happens he is given that day off, but when he is off shift on a bank holiday, he currently gets nothing in lieu of that day.

My question is, should he be getting that additional time too?
Even though he has is not actually working on those bank holidays, he would have been off anyway as he is off shift, so it's not technically an extra day off.
Hope this makes sense! I would really appreciate it if someone could clear this issue up for me - he really doesn't want to go to his boss with this unless he's sure he has a good case!

Thanks!

I was told at previous job that if we worked bank hols we'd get another day off instead under new rules.

He is entitled to 28 days or in your case 224 hrs whether that be on the Bank Holidays or not. If his shift falls on a B/H and he has that day off then this would be part of the 224 hrs, if he is not working on a B/H then it would have no effect on his oustanding Holiday entitlement.

Basically he is entitled to 224 working hrs off.
