My son is 18 and is a student at uni. He has a part time job of 20 hours per week which pays about £7400 per annum. His monthly pay is £616. His tax code is BR (M1) and he pays £123 tax per month and £17.93 NI. Does anyone know if this is right cos I thought it sounded a bit steep. thanks

No, its not right. he has not given his employer a form P45 or a P46. assuming he does not have a P45 he needs to ask the employer for a form P46 (or print one off from www.hmrc.gov.uk). he signs this to say its his only job (and his first job if thats the case). he will then be put on code 647L and the overpaid tax will be refunded. Tax will be about £15 pm. NIC is correct.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

also if he has been working since before the start of this tax year (6th April 2009) he may have overpaid tax for the last tax year. If so he will need to contact his tax office and request a calculation be made and any overpaid tax to be re-paid. If he has a P60 for 08/09 then this will allow him to calculate what he is owed.0
