DVD player not recognising it's own discs.

A philips dvd player / recorder the type that sits underneath a TV. Uses DVD +RW discs. The first set of discs we used lasted a long time, many months. Then one day I was deleting some of the recorded titles, and the dvd player started to refuse to allow title deletions on these old discs.
We had some new Maxell ones and the player was fine with them allowing rec/del. Those discs are still in use for as long as the old ones had been in use, and are still ok. I thought about trying to delete the stuff on the old/broken discs using a computer. So I have some discs with titles on which do play on a computer, (don't know if they play on the dvd player, and I can't check now because I'm recording something.) I also have two empty discs that the computer recognises, but the dvd player says "no disc" for one of them i.e. does not recognise the disc, the other disc it recognises the disc is there and it is empty but will not allow any recording onto the disc.
Is there anyway of wiping these discs using a computer? The thing is I don't know what software to use. I have opened them so far and played them using Windows media player and another program called powerdvd. But I can't see anything allowing me to delete the titles. Also when you see the root menu on this dvd player, there is a screen capture for each title on the disc, then there are navigation arrows on the screen cap, one on top to go to the title before it, or to the root/root. one arrow on the bottom to go to the tile after it. and there should be an arrow to the right which when you click on that arrow it takes you to the options allowing for deletions. But on these discs both on the dvd player and on the computer display, there are no arrows on the right of the screen caps. I did notice that powerdvd has a pad function that would have allowed navigation to the right if the arrows had been there, but there are no arrows. And I just put in a good disc which the dvd player does allow deletions, and there is no arrow on the right when it is put into the computer.
So basically I'm asking if you have come across this before when a disc loses its RW properties and can anything be done using a computer to fix it?
