I'd try and stock up on fillers.

bit of long life milk and you could have potato gratin (cheese, milk, potatoes, herbs - delicious).

    ooo! this sounds nice

    how do u do it>

Been a while since I made it and can't remember which cookery book I got the recipe, so I've just pulled out trusty Delia.

    book http://www.amazon.co.uk/Delias-Complete-Cookery-Course-Classic/dp/0563362499

(not one I'd necessarily buy if I was pinching the pennies, but is a good book for a collection) -

    Recipe

    1lb potatoes
    1 clove garlic, crushed
    150ml double cream
    150ml of milk
    dash of nutmeg
    25g butter

preheat oven to 150C. Butter an 8.5 inch shallow dish

Peel and slice potatoes VERY thin. Rinse in cold water to remove starch then dry with a tea towel.

Arrange a layer of potatoes, sprinkle garlic, pepper and salt
Then another layer of potatoes and season.

Mix milk and cream, pour over the potatoes, with a bit of nutmeg & add butter flecks over the top (or grated cheese which is what I would do, yum) - bake on highest shelf of oven for 1.5 hours.

Recipe is a bit different, but was wondering if you didn't have cream it might be *alright* if you thickened the milk a bit with flour if you were using full fat anyway?? (NEVER TRIED IT!!!) Also, would be a shame to miss out the garlic, but a few dried herbs might make a nice accompaniment? And obviously nutmeg you could well do without.
    I love surprises!

A variation on that is one that I do. Slice potatoes and onions. Layer alternately (potato, onion, potato) sprinkling some garlic powder and thyme in between the layers, then pour on some veg stock until it's just at the top layer. Pop in the oven for about 40 minutes.

This is really tasty and the thyme goes really well with it.

Just a thought, do the cats have to have cat food? Tinned value tuna and pilchards are actually cheaper!
