Relocation Allowances

Hi all,

At the moment I am looking for jobs that would involve relocating elsewhere within the UK and I was just wondering if the majority of jobs will offer a relocation allowance? e.g. is it pretty standard procedure for any job or just larger companies? (fyi - it is town planning jobs I am looking at, either in local authorities or planning consultancies)

Thanks everyone, would be helpful to know in advance before filling out applications/sending my CV etc.

I've rarely ever heard of anybody being paid to relocate. That's for high up people in specialist areas probably ... certainly not at a time when people are being laid off left right and centre.

I know somebody who relocated 300 miles in about 1996 from one Council to another and wasn't paid any relocation, even though their job was quite senior.

The council I work for pay relocation above certain levels i.e. assistant directors & executive directors.....not sure about planners but it should be stated in the application details.

My present company paid my removal expenses which came to £1000. I had to agree to stay with the company for two years or pay the money back.

Relocation is payable usually when your current employer requests the move, or you are in a "difficult to recruit" position. It's rare that companies pay for new joiners - the thinking is that the candidate know where the job is when they apply in the first place.

As for sums, I've recruited a couple of positions recently (internal transfers) where I've said we would pay reasonable expenses up to £5k.

You used to get relocation in quite average jobs, even in the public sector but I imagine that this has suffered in the cutbacks.
