Dental hygenist cost

Hi.
Went to the dentist the other week - nhs one. She said I neede to make an appointment with the hygienist. Which I did. Just got back and been charged £22. (Was only in 5 mins - was very lame !!)

But I thought it came under the fee I paid for the check up the other week?? I kind of said this to the receptionist but she said it was a private hygienist so did not apply??

Confused now - can anyone explain?????

My hygienist cost £40 and it takes a good deal longer than 5mins. I am normally in there a good 30mins if not more.

The fee is charged in addition to a check-up fee

The NHS will only pay for actual treatment: the hygienist is considered to be preventative and is therefore not covered. I see a private hygienist and it costs me £40 a visit. Money well-spent in my opinion: as you probably know, more teeth are lost through gum disease than decay so it really is worth paying for
  • The best way to save money and teeth is to keep them scrupulously clean.
    Floss every day.

I am 50 and have never needed a scale and polish.:D
The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket.

I'll want to do a S&P on you because you WILL feel the difference :money::money:
  • Should you floss once or twice a day?

Depends how many teeth you want when you're 70.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • More than twice then?

I still feel I was diddled. She hardly did anything. Wee bit of a scrape and then a bit on some kind of blue/purple paste on a few teeth at the front. That was it.
Hubbie had the dentist do a clean up while we were there - don't understand why I had to fork out extra ?? And to be charged when I was not expecting that.
