In these letters, should I mention anywhere that I cancelled my membership and was informed I was owed no more money, or not?
NO, give them nothing, let THEM prove what the debt is, and why you're liable for it.

Disclose information only when it's required.

    Yes, you sure can.

My OH has just told me that with AOL there is a way of going back through your e-mail history and still viewing e-mails that have been deleted-as it will be stored on your computer hard drive.
If you are using the same computer that you used to download the e.mails received and sent- When you go on to AOL you go into either deleted e-mails or history (he's not sure which) and it will show all e-mails received and sent from and to aol that you have ever done on that computer-as they are stored on that computers hard drive=. If and when you find the relevant e.mail (s) print it (them) off!!
    I hope this works-good luck

    Hi,
I have spent about two hours this morning, searching my PC trying to find a scrap of evidence of these emails, with no success!!!

I am visiting a family member tonight who still uses AOL - I was thinking of using their pc to access my email account to see if I can retrieve the emails that way... I KNOW I saved all of the emails, both sent and received, but this was done by actually logging into the AOL 9.0 software (which they require you to do when cancelling membership) and now, as I no longer have the software, I can only access the email account through a normal browser and the emails in my saved folders (and there are some going back to middle of 2008) do NOT include the cancellation emails

    Did AOL steal them? lol!

Just out of interest, does anyone else find this latest letter... awful? I mean, we are on a DMP so we are not unused to collection agency letters, and their threatening tone, but this one really upset me. I feel like, if they could be standing at my living room window with baseball bats, they would be! I know their intention is to intimidate and they have succeeded with this one.

I totally agree with you EmptyPockets, this letter is absolutely awful.

"You will only have yourself to blame" LMAO! I know why it's upsetting you, it sounds parental, it would upset me too (then make me laugh, then make me angry).

Try not to let it get to you though. Look at the letter closely, the informal style of writing is completely unprofessional and appears to have been sent by a person with limited grasp of the English language (I'm picky about my grammar :o)! Their only hope is to intimidate you into paying up.

Stand strong and let us know how you get on.

I know it's a bit too late now - but AOL email in an internet browser is useless. They don't keep old emails. For future reference get a new email address and email all other important emails to this account. AOL email is mostly designed for AOL customers - where you can access it through the AOL browser.

    Hello.

I cancelled my AOL subscription back in December and saved the email which they sent in April 09, acknowledging my cancellation, although they omitted the date I'd cancelled it.

I have had no other discussion with AOL nor had I cancelled my direct debit. It simply had not been collected so I assumed all had gone well, or at least as well as AOL ever does things.

In the last two weeks I received all three of the letters which the original poster received, including, word for word, the final one which says 'you'll only have yourself to blame' which arrived this morning.

Unfortunately, I emailed them back about an hour ago -

I am writing in response to your demand letter dated 4.6.09 and intend to
appraise you of the events which have led to me receiving what I believe to be
an unfair, bullying and rather unprofessional letter sent by yourselves.

In December last year I was being asked by AOL to transfer my account to AOL
Broadband from the dial up service I had used for many years. I agreed and a
cd was sent to me however the software did not work and I was not connected.
After repeated attempts at connection I contacted their member services call
centre and was informed that the error must lie with my connection cable,
something with which I had not had a problem with before.
Nevertheless, I changed the cable. The problems remained and so I contacted
their call centre again. Again they informed me that everything should be fine
and there was nothing wrong with their connections. At this point I tried the
connection cable on a friends computer and there was no issue with the cable.
I contacted AOL in late December and cancelled my membership. I did not
cancel my direct debit as I believed that once my membership had cancelled the
direct debits would cease. Which they did.
I registered with Tiscali and have not had a problem with their service or my
original connection cable throughout and continuing to this time.
I considered the matter closed with AOL. No further direct debits were taken
from my account. In April 09, I received this email on my old aol software.

    Dear AOL Member

We can now confirm that as requested, your AOL Broadband line has been
disconnected and your Internet access has reverted to a dial-up connection. If
you are still within your 0 minimum contractual period, any outstanding amounts
due under your AOL Broadband Agreement will be debited from your payment method
on or shortly after your next billing date, unless otherwise agreed.

Please note that this does not affect any order you have placed or
subscription you currently have for the AOL Talk service, unless you have
specifically asked us to cancel this at the same time.

Please remember if you would like to keep your AOL Screen Name and continue to
access the AOL software, your AOL Email account, Address Book and Buddy List
you can continue to do so for free even though your subscription to AOL
Broadband has ended. To do so, sign on to the AOL software as usual, or go to 'web address'*
to access your emails when not at home. For more information
    visit 'web address'

We're sorry you've decided not to continue with AOL Broadband at this time. If
you have any queries, please visit Web address Alternatively you
can contact our Memberr Services team on 0844 499 5555**, or online at web address
    Yours sincerely,

    AOL Broadband Team

    * As a new user, the forum doesn't allow links, so I've replaced the text with 'Web Address'.

At that point, I merely thought that their customer service was extremely
slow. The next contact I have had regarding anything to do with AOL was your
demand letter dated in May. At no point have AOL been in contact with me for
services I have yet to pay for and I would dispute that there is any service
which I do have to pay for. If AOL believed that I still had an outstanding
balance then as I said earlier, they would have been able to collect it from my
account as I had not, and still have not, put a stop on it.

To summarise, I set up my AOL Broadband account and within 3-4 days cancelled
it due to AOL's poor customer service, seeking a better service provider.

I would like to know what I am being accused - as I quite clearly am being by
yourselves -of. To what service does the amount of £68.48 apply?

I look forward to your prompt reply.

I'm awaiting their reply. I'll update this board if I get one. I don't think I will. If I have received nothing in 2 days, I'll send the letter that is written above by 10past6, which I think is excellent.

Let's see how this plays out.
