WAshing machine help

Just got a new washing machine, first brand newie we've ever had, and obviously want to keep it working. OH suggested buying calgon (we live in a hard water area).
Is there anything else that does the same thing (but cheaper?) and if not do you really have to use it every wash or can you get away with putting it in every couple of washes?

Thanks for that, I use crystals in my wash already (but don't have the bag anymore to read the info), so thats easy enough0

Hi emay,
I use soda crystals in my washing and they soften the water and help prevent the build up of limescale so I've never used calgon, and my washing machine will be 24 years old next month! Sometimes I really wish it would break down so I could justify getting a new one.
There are a couple of old threads on Calgon worth reading:
Calgon
DON'T use Calgon!
This thread might help too:
Cleaning a washing machine
I'll add your thread to it later to keep the suggestions together.

You don't need water softener...it's already in the washing powder.Debt-free day: 8th May 2015 "Remember that sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck," Dalai Llama0
