BBQ propane gas: How much to pay and how long do they last?

Hi all.

Long time board surfer here, but it's about time I took the plunge into contributing...

I'm feeling confident that we're going to have a good summer (and that I haven't already missed it...) so I've decided to splash out on a gas barbie, but was wondering if anyone with one can share there experiences of where they get their gas from, how much it costs and how long the gas lasts?

I'm going to get just a small two burner BBQ from B&Q or somewhere similar (don't need anything bigger) and recker it's worth buying the 13kg bottles of propane gas for it, but don't know how long it will last. Any ideas, anyone?

Also, while in B&Q over the weekend they told me their 13kg propane gas (Calor, 37mbar) is £25 for a refill (plus the initial £29.99 for the gas bottle rental). Is this a good price? Anyone got any suggestions where else I could go to buy it?

Obviously it depends on how much you use it!!! But with our summers we rarely use a large bottle up. As for the initial cost I went to our local recycling center and gave the lad there £5 for an empty bottle then just got a refill.

You could try Asda as they had some for £75 and quite large too

me to but i also asked for them to check the bottles and give me one with gas and i got an almost full bottle of gas with mine for £5

....if you just have the odd BBQ here and there then it'll last you a fair bit, but if you have a lot of them and fairly regularly and frequently then it would gobble more gas;on some of the bigger more powerful LPG BBQ's with high power burners and infra red plaque rotisserie roasting burners etc, these would probably go thru a 13kg Calor Patio Gas cylinder quicker(the burners would probably use more gas being high powered), for these high power BBQ's a 19kg red Calor Propane bottle or a larger 47kg Calor Propane bottle would give plenty of gas and BBQ's per pound than a 13kg Calor Gas Patio Cylinder would.

Best to avoid B&Q or other DIY stores if your looking for gas bottles as normally they try to provide canisters that can only be refilled at their stores for higher charges than independant gas resellers. As others suggest your local tip / recycling center is the best bet. I believe flogas is cheaper than calor as a supplier but harder to find an old bottle.

...Calor costs more more but has hundreds of thousands of stockists/calor gas centres/agencies around the country so it's cylinders are more easily available-BP Gas Light is available from Homebase and selected independent stockists but is cheaper and worth a look.
