Florescent (sp) lights

My hubby and I were discussing today about these kinds of lights. We have both been told by our parents that it takes more electricity to knock them on and off than it does to keep them on. Now as we're fanatical about knocking lights off in the house this one is a bit of a quandry. Does it take more electricity to knock them on and off?

Sorry! I had to laugh! You paid so much attention to spelling the word florescent (I don't know how to spell it either :o ) that you spelt 'lights' wrong! :p;) :rotfl:

In answer to your question I have no idea what they are?

Hehe... that made me laugh too... :rotfl:

As for the 'more electricity' question... yeah, that's what i was always told by my parents too... tho i'm not sure how true it actually is (you know what parents can be like... ;) )

It does, however, take more electricity to boot up and shut down your PC than it does to just leave it running for while you're away from it for a time.

if its a serious question...turn off the lights, its a very long standing urban myth that turning on florescent lights takes a significant amount of energy, it doenot

I've had a bit of a look around, and it seems that it does cause an energy surge if you turn on a light, but the effect lasts less than a second, so as long as you leave it off for more than a second (!) you will save money.

according to an 'energy saving guide' written by bods from the Eden Project, turning a flourescent bulb off and on again takes the same energy as leaving it on for 5 mins. So i switch mine off if i'm going to be out of the kitchen for more than 5 mins, leave it on if not. for normal bulbs, it's always cheaper to turn it off.
