    Desperate times my friend.......

    I know.

Mate of mind works for a large corporate estate agent.
He told me ( in confidence) that they are taking the view now that if someone wants to buy one of their repo's, they have to do the mortgage with thel, or they can forget it

Totaaly illeigal, but difficult to prove otherwise, as they can say your bid was unsuccessful for some other reason.

In the past, I have had to tell some of my clients to take inferior mortgage deals with an estate agent to those I could offer personally, as I knew that they would lose the home they had their heart set on if they did not.
Mind you, I have also told them to bad mouth the agent in question to all their friends and family afterwards;)

Perhaps we better not start a debate about estate agents and moral standards on here ;)

Well guys I'm not sure what Halifax's motives were but their mortgage offer was legit. Have the key facts, have it agreed in principle... 3.99% fixed for 5 years. I am sure that there is a whole moral/legal debate here but all I know is that I have a better mortgage and my survey went through fine today, so I can't really complain!!

i would say your broker has found that offer for you because they believe it is one you can GET. When I got my mortgage I was paying 6% when the lowest available rates for my situation were about 5% but my broker knew I'd get declined for those so went for something I was actually eligible for!

No wonder Halifax needed state aid.
