Problem with front tooth

I have a crown on my front tooth which I thought had come loose. When I went for my check up the dentist took the crown off and said that the bit of tooth underneath had split in two and this was what was loose. He took some xrays and recommended that I had the tooth out and a single denture fitted on nhs so cost £195. Afterwards I could have an implant but I can't afford this.

He said I could have a bridge for around £1000 but I have crowns at either side of this tooth so wouldn't recommend it.

I'd be grateful if any dentists on here could offer any other solution. Does this tooth have to come out, can anything be done to make this solid again as the crown is still ok.

Fractured teeth like this can't be stuck back together.

Without seeing you, I can't really be specific, but it does sound like he's given you a good outline of your options.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I thought to have a bridge, it was necessary to have the teeth either side crowned to support it (unless, like my sister, you are given a cantilever bridge supported by one crown) so puzzled why it is not ideal for a bridge?

He said he would have to drill into the teeth at both sides to attach the bridge and as I already had crowns there it wasn't advisable.

I really didn't have time to talk to him as it was a nhs appointment and other people waiting. It was a shock for me to be told that the tooth had to come out and then the options were a single denture at £195, a bridge around £1000 or implant £2500. I just thought he would stick the crown back on LOL. He did that until I make up my mind but it has come loose again so I need to decide what to do.
  • Just to echo toothsmith's post, he does sound like he has told you exactly how it is. So often on here people seem to get fobbed off by their NHS dentists. Unfortunately, once teeth have been restored with crowns, there is little leeway for future restorations. There are so many reasons a bridge may not be appropriate, only your dentist can tell to be honest.

Split teeth are a pain in the bum! Good luck, hope you get it sorted.

If the teeth either side of the failed root are ok then it is possible to replace those crowns with a bridge, it should be available on the nhs .
Other factors come into the decision ie brushing, diet, number of fillings/gaps ,bite
It is possible to have a temporary bridge instead of a denture while the bone arounf the extraction site heals
  • I wouldn't attach any sort of bridge to a root filled central and I wouldn't put a fixed bridge on a lateral incisor, that may just be my opinion for my patients but it's all stuff we don't know from the OP.

Very interesting to find a dental forum within MSE :money: Anyway, see if you have a root #, is it definitely XLA or would it be possible to keep it until the patient decides to go for an implant in order to retain the bone levels instead of XLA + bone augmentation at a later date due to resorbtion ? I recon XLA is the more sensible option here but just wondering what you guys thought:beer:
  • I would worry about periradicular infection if I left a # root hanging round for long. That would affect the bone too. Maybe short term with immediate implant placement it would be ok. I don't do implants and have only a very tiny interest in them!

It isn't a dental forum - it's a health and beauty forum where some dentists lurk around and give answers to the public on dental matters. So you have to speak English - not jargon, or no-one (apart from dentists) will understand what you're on about, and that won't help anyone!
