HMRC random check

My partner is a self employed roofer and does his own accounts and online tax return. He completed the 2008-2009 a few weeks ago and is owed a rebate. When the money didn't arrive in our account he phoned up and was informed that he has been randomly selected for checks to make sure the return is accurate and that he is who he says he is!
What will this involved and how long will it take? Typically we can't get any info out of the helpline!

They will check that he is on the voters list and with other published directories to make sure he lives at the address he has give. These checks are slowiong up the repayment process a bit, so expect a short delay.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

Elaine_wilson posted a similar message on June 5th, and other people have done the same from time to time: the replies have some interesting information. The amount to be refunded may affect HMRC's decision to check before repaying.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?
