Paternity DNA Tests

I have had problems with the CSA regarding the paternity of a child. The CSA have finally agreed a DNA test be taken to determine the child's parentage.

There appears to be are two types of DNA test: 1. Court Approved and 2. Peace of Mind DNA test. Given the CSA is involved I presume I must have a court approved DNA test to ensure the results are deemed conclusive.

Does anyone have first hand experience of what this involves e.g. the costs, where I can get authorised tests done, what procedures are involved etc.

It costs around £200, cellmark sends you a list of approved swab takers, you make an appointment and have to show with 2 passport type photos, they run like a cotton bud on your gums and transfer the sample onto a another pad seal it and send it off, the pwc and child have to do the same.
After a time couple of weeks or so, they send back the results basically the childs dna is the same as the mother and where it differs the dna is that of the father . there are 16 points.

    Mother 9 child 9 father 11

    mother 8,11 child 8,14 father 10,14
    etc etc

The CSA will issue you with a slip on it will be two declarations D1 is you will refund the cost of the test to the CSA should you be the father, D2 is you will pay for the test up front and the CSA will refund you the fee if you not the father cost about £530.00 for D1 and £470.00 for D2. As DUTR has said you will revieve a list of Doctors who do the test in your area you simple make an appointment and turn up with two passport photos.

On the other hand if you have been told by the CSA to go away and sort out your own test then that is a different story. Firstly the other party has to agree to the test.
  • Thanks for your replies. However, I am a little confused. The two photographs I need to bring should they be two forms of ID like a passport or driving licence and a utility bill. Or do I need to bring two new passport photographs?

Also is the cost £200 as DUTR quoted or £530?

Finally, do you have any idea whether your DNA is retained on file or destroyed after the results of the test? Thanks.

Thankfully times have moved on, when myself and my son went for DNA tests it was still blood that they required. Also if i recall correctly me (pwc) never got the results  Just a phonecall from the NRP

I'm looking at the paperwork now, it was £194 at the time if I paid upfront, it would have been more if the csa paid for it think it was £300 at the time.
The data is destroyed after 12 months...so they claim :o

I didn't speak to the pwc, the daughter has a remarkable resemblence to me anyways, but it was my choice to opt for the test so I did ;). The csa said the pwc nrp and themselves get a copy of the results. This was 2007

My husband has recently had a Private DNA Test. The test was done by cellmark www.cellmark.co.uk. The mother, child and my husband were not given a list of approved sample takers, but all went to their GP's and paid £60.00 each for the mouth swabs to be taken. They also had to take 2 passport photographs each which were verified by their GP. The cost of the test privately was £458.00 (which my husband paid for - not sure if he can claim this back in view of the negative result). From receiving all the samples we received the results within 5 working days. My husband paid for the test and he requested that he was the only one who had the report. We have not told the PWC the results of this test though I'm sure it's not going to be too much of a shock

The samples are destroyed after 3 months and the paperwork after 12 months, though we have asked that my husbands are kept indefinately but await to hear.

Just another bit of advice really - please make sure that you have plenty of support during the process. I'm not sure of your circumstances or whether you are the PWC or NRP, but in our case it has been a devastating time for the child, my husband and our family.

I'm not sure if this is kept up to date - but take a look at this from the CSA website http://www.csa.gov.uk/en/about/faq/disputed-parentage.asp
