Refunding bank/cc charges - don't understand!

I've seen loads of posts about people have their bank or credit card charges refunded but I really don't understand.
Surely if I go overdrawn its my fault and my problem?
Can someone advise as if I can go for this, I'm of course very interested.

the issues is that under contract law in the uk you cannot usually be charged a penalty for breaking the contracct but they can charge you their reasonable costs...now given a computer generated bit a paper costs virtually nothing, it is deemed that charging you £30 is unreaonable and will not be supported by the law.....they can charge you interest however.
read the following thread..its veery comprehensive.

So they can charge me if I go overdrawn and I can't do anything about that, but I can if I've had to pay a penalty for a missed direct debit? I'm not sure if I can do antything then, as I'm pretty certain that I haven't had any of my direct debits returned. Shame.0 -
