Debenhams cosmetics counter staff will sometimes give you perfume samples if you ask nicely
And the Body Shop gave me a cute little pot with a sample of some moisturiser in last week, as I asked the SA for some recommendations and said I wanted to try them out before buying the full-size!

Chanel counters are giving away samples of their new mascara just now. There's a card in Elle magazine for the freebie but you don't need it, DD got one yesterday just for the asking.
Also, try the Clinique counters, DD and her friend always manage to blag freebies from them in the department stores. I never have any luck though, I think they tend to go for the youngsters in the hope they will have a customer for life....... or maybe I just look like a lost cause0 -
Ahava (39 Monmouth Street, Covent Garden, London) have samples if you ask nicely and show an interest in the Dead Sea.
It's a Dead Sea mineral based company (I work as a beauty therapist for them), very nice products but they won't give you many samples, unless I'm on the till!! Not worth travelling for but good if you're passing.0 -
Origins counters will decant into small pots for you to try, I normally ask nicely for samples and explain that I do not buy until I have tried (normally works for me).0

What's your strategy for asking for the samples? I'm rubbish! Way too shy and I feel compelled to buy something, so better off staying away from the beauty counters! :-(0

Benefit cosmetics also often do samples.
One way I try to get samples is to find out what product they are promoting (what is newest is normally what they are promoting) then pick it up from the counter and ask about it. Ask the price too, then when they say, appear to be interested but unsure. Then ask if they have any samples you could test at home first.
Alternativly do the above and buy something- I tried this with the Chanel mascara- after asking about the free mascara first showed no joy, I bought an eyeshadow thing with my boots points (was planning on this anyway) then she announced she was going to give a free mascara sample to me... Odd but worked!
Also, having free makeovers can help, especially with places like Origins, Benefit and workd for Clarins -but they did have a 'clarins giveaway' going on so not sure if that would work every time.
Look for empty bored looking sales assistants, chat with them, make friends with them, they are more likely to want to help you or sell to you. Week day mid afternoons or early week day mornings tend to be best, but mid week is better then weekend if your going in the evening.
Buying things can help, but not always, not every assistant always has freebies to give away. There not always being tight! try to flick through mags and find out which products are new and ask about these.0 -
have sneakily used the sampler aftershave spray in Boots chemists, superdrug etc, before an interview / going out etc! they are clearly marked, though best not to abuse it! (like going every day..)Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0
