New employer wants my P60, surely not right?

I just started a new job this week it was payday today and I've been paid in cash to the sum of £200 of £240.11 earned before deductions. He has apparently sent off for the employee pack from IR. It's my first job in this tax year so I have no P45, so he wants my P60 surely thats not right? What would be the appropriate form to fill in? He has one other employee who apparently does self assessment. I'm not entirely sure he intends to 'put me through the books'. I don't want to be done for tax evasion so would I be better off doing self assesment too? Or if he says he's putting me through the books even if there's no proof is that enough to cover me? If I do self assesment am I still entitled to min wage?
Thanks for the help all.

What you need to fill in is a p46, this is for him to forward to HMRC. They will tell him hwo much you have earned and set your tax code. Your p60 from your las job has nothing to do with him. (keep all things like this safe in a file for future reference) Did you pay NI on your first weeks pay as well as tax. You need to ask him directly if he is taking you on 'on the books' to enable you to sort yur finances out.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I did ask him as I pointed out that I want to be on the books and he said yes, and he can back date it to when I started once he has it sorted, my insticts were telling me this was not the truth tho. He origianlly said I would be off the books for the first week and then extended this to two weeks. The £200 is purely a convenient number, no tax or NI will have actually been paid yet.0

He's being naughty, NI should be payable from day one fand if you havent worked in this tax year you probably wont pay tax for a few weeks anyway, wait and see what happens when he gets his employer pack from HMRC he amybe has not done this sort of thing before but dont worry,

He's a local small business man with a couple of pet shops, I'm working in the one he's just taken over.
He mentioned putting me on the books as a 'casual worker' for now what does that mean? If he's doing this to pay me less than minimum wage I will not be happy.
I was thinking, it could be sorted properly by the end of the month with a monthly payslip supplied then, and the £200 could be considered a cash advance on my wages.
He's not done it before so I think I will be 'helping' him keep on the straight and narrow and if he doesn't want to do this, or hasn't sorted it by the end of the month I will be insisting on min wage gross and I will sort it.0 -
Self assessment is not an option - as you are not self employed...
Sounds as if he doesn't know what he is doing, suppose you could offer to help him with sorting out all the paperwork and getting him to sign it, either that or he should pay someone to do his payroll.0 -
