I'll answer what questions I can and then I am sure others will answer what I can't.
    Hope I've helped.

Here goes.... Let me know if you have any other questions, hope this helps.

    a) that is a lot of money! It basically leaves me with £250 per month after rent, utilities, bills and a very basic food budget (which in reality i'm probably underestimating). The thing that worries me is not being able to cope with any unexpected expenditure like car repairs (and yes I do need it!) or any unexpected bills. The plus side of course is being debt free after three years, which is nothing really.

Your budget needs to reflect your situation and cover your living costs. If you have not worked to a detailed budget before then it may take a couple of months to get used to it. But if you are really struggling, then you would need to discuss this with the CCCS. Keeping a spending diary often helps as you can see exactly what you are spending.

    b) Is this £500 per month for three years more or less guaranteed?
As mentioned, the budget reflects your situation. So if you have no changes your payment will stay at the £500. You will have a review ever 12 months to make sure everything is going ok. If there is any major changes though you would need to let the CCCS know.

    c) I'm a bit confused about how it all works. From what i've read on here, the creditors don't have to accept the offers from CCCS and interest and charges continue to be applied until you may end up with a CCJ. Do CCCS support you while this is going on? How does any outstanding interest or charges ever end up being resolved and a line drawn under it? What do you do with all the correspondence you receive from the creditors eg late payment letters and over-limit statements?

I would recommend that you keep them all in a file and to keep track. Some creditors may agree to the DMP straight away, others may take a little longer, but the key thing is they can not have what you have not got.

    d) I'm currently with Barclays, including overdraft. According to the quote i've just got from CCCS, Barclays will allow you to keep on your account if you enter into a DMP with CCCS. Does this apply for accounts with attached overdrafts too? A new account would be set up at Barclays away from your overdraft. Or you could choose to open another bank where you have no debts, it’s up to you.

    e) If I end up needing to, is trying to get a basic account set up relatively painless? I Can see them all refusing me!

Everyone is entitled to a basic bank account; you could choose one off this link

    many thanks indeed!

sorry if this is posted in the wrong place. i'm new!

I am having some problems with Grattan, I had an account with them some time ago and moved house, sent them a letter to change my address, heard nothing, repeated this 2 more times...still nothing, i checked my credit file to find a default from a company called eos solutions, after alot of waiting on the phone i found this to be the Grattan account( eos could not give me a statement of this account) So i called Grattan and asked to discuss the account and to have a statement of the account sendt to my new address. Rita at Grattan said she could not discuss the account, could not put me through to anyone in collections and that i must speak to Eos. i argued that i had given my address to them and its their fault if they did not update. I had tried. Advice please, Eos have now taken the account from the £229 to over £330. there was no reason for this debt to be sold on as i i had given Grattan my new address and asked them to send me statements so i could pay.

    HELP

I have always maintained contact with my creditors albeit on my conditions. I Would ring them to find out what they have to say. I would also add that you need to be strong and just tell them that your on a DMP with whoever and that they have sent you a proposal making an offer based on what you can afford.

    Regards

  • Hi everyone,

I have just contacted the CCCS and signed up for a debt management plan. Very scared but has to be a step in the right direction. DH doesn't know about my finances, maybe I will tell him one day when things are heading in the right direction.

Looking for some support with others who know what its like.

I was in your position in April and since then i have had highs and lows and to be honest without the support of my wife well i just dont know what might have happened. Anyway you need to tell your partner. My DMP starts in June and it is a wait off my shoulders I have already had 1 creditor accept my offer and CCCS are very supportive and are always there as we are here.

    Regards and good luck.

    Hi Natasha
It is a VERY scary thing when you first embark on your DMP. So many questions and thoughts all churning round in your head - bit like the washing machine on fast spin (and your stomach keeps pace too!)
However you will probably find that after the first few months when the DMP has bedded in, it becomes part of the fabric of life, and you'll take it all in your stride. Often it's difficult to keep to your budget but you'll know you are working towards your debt free date :j
But, you really MUST tell your partner. Difficult to do I know but you need each other. Your relationship is of paramount importance and you can't cope by yourself and hope to cover up a DMP.
Good luck to you and all others starting out. There is always someone here to help.
Welcome to our happy (but skint :D) band.

If you feel strong and calm enough to handle the call you could ring them. Sometimes the direct approach works best.
It also hapens that creditors can try the bullying approach, ringing constantly and trying to get you to pay more than you can afford.
Personally my thoughts are if they want to talk to me they can pay the cost of the phone call :D
If you get too much harrassment write them a letter stating you want written contact only. (There is a template but sorry can't find it at the moment.)
It should all settle down after a little while once your DMP gets going. Hope all goes well for you.
