Debt seems to be getting worse, we have just had loads of car problems and are having to pay up to a £1000 to get it fixed. We thought about having only 1 car but can't due to where we live and husband's shifts.I have sold everything I can on ebay, I have sold gold, traded in mobile phones. I have got rid of contents insurance monthly and paid a lump sum.Any other suggestions?thanks

Can you do anything to earn extra money - do some babysitting for neighbours, get a part time job for a while say doing something a few evenings a month?

If you pay council tax over 10 months you will be coming up to your 2 months off giving you £125pcm to pay off your debts. Every little helps.

If you are receiving statutory maternity pay then you need not to be working to continue to receive it. Might be best suited in that case to something like babysitting, a more informal arrangement, not a formal job. You could put adverts in the supermarket/corner shop for babysitting?

If you are on unpaid maternity leave, then you would probably only have to consider if your employer would have a problem with you doing a more formal second job (i.e. what if your boss saw you stacking shelves in the supermarket whilst getting their weekly shopping?).

Maybe making things to sell on ebay/etsy/etc or taking in ironing or something might be better than an additional part time job?

Is an IVA my only option? Has anyone cleared about £60k debt ( not including mortgage) without doing an IVA?Any suggestions?
  • Dog walking? Easy to do if you have a baby and cash in hand.
  • Hi there

I see this thread's been on the go since 2009. I'm sorry to hear things haven't got easier.

You really should put all your outgoings into this format to see if it helps www.makesenseofcards.com/soacalc.html

Once you've put down on screen exactly where and how much you owe I'm sure you'll find it easier. If you've APR for your cards too this will help. You know, there's a lot of clever folk on here and I've seen what I could term "miracles" happen. Hopefully you too could get some peace of mind from that type of help.

I also know there's other boards dealing with specific things so you should try looking on there too.

    Good luck
