I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Yes, they do eventually get round to checking everyone's liability and sending out either refunds or assessments.
(For very old HMRC staff - who remembers the old ANZT days?)

Most people ask questions in this site about how to apply for a refund themselves and advice is given on how to do this. However if they didn't HMRC would eventually get to them as unbalanced records remain open and on a worklist until assessed. HMRC have obviously got round to your name and you overpaid in 07/08 so they are sending you a refund.

    Enjoy :D

Thats the plan, to get shot of COP, but then that has been the plan for the past 3 or 4 years i think.

If all goes well, you will be able to access a record anywhere in the UK too so no more of this "who is my tax office" palava :p

    I remember ANZT!

Please check these "unsolicited" repayments carefully especially if you have had more than one job, been also self-employed or have a pension or substantial investment income. I have seen instances where HMRC has not matched up information and assumed there is only one PAYE source when perhaps there are 2 or a pension, leading to a situation where personal allowances are given twice. A few years down the line, the information is matched up and the repayment is found to be incorrect. Bad news for the taxpayer!
