bit of advise

Hi All

I am on £12268 per year and husband is on nearly £25k per year.

Husband had 2 defaults - I (stupidly) lifted cash from my credit card to pay them off. But thats them cleared now.

I have 2 credit cards - Capital One (credit limit £2000)
Barclaycard (credit limit £3900)

they are both at their limits - the problem is because of the highcash interest rate i am paying, every month I am paying the minimum payment and nearly every month the interest brings it over my limit so i get charge a overlimit fee.

We applied for a joint loan to try and clear (this was months ago) but got refused (don't know why - poss defaults but they would have been cleared for over 12 months - Thames are chasing him and had registered 2 defaults but they were statute barred and fell off his file - but last week he got a phone call out of the blue from them again so they may have stuck another one on - haven't checked his credit file)

Anyway the reason why I am posting, we are going to look for a mortgage and I want to get my credit cards sorted, does anyone have any advise for me at all?

Defaults stay on file for 6 years after being issued. How long ago were his defaults?

Your best bet might be to appy for a low life of balance credit card to transfer you credit cards to. Have a look on the credit card board for more help on what card.

What are Thames chasing him for?

His defaults were in 2004 but we put a notice of correction that it was because he was made redundant at the time.

Thames are chasing him for £200 from a Barclaycard that he had in about 1997 but was cleared in 1999. We thought it had all been sorted when the defaults came off but obviously not!

Is this the first correspondence you have received since 1999? If so he is not liable for that debt anymore!

    Hi Pats

I think that the best advice that anyone here could give you is to try to find the money to start paying back your cards, either by bringing in extra income or (more probably) saving money on your monthly budget.

If you post a soa (statement of affairs, ie your monthly budget showing your income and outgoings), people here are pretty canny at spotting where you could tighten up and save money, and might be able to help you.

I know its all wrong but you can't talk to them.

You mentioned applying for a low life of balance credit card - as my credit card debt is half of what I earn would I be able to get one on my own for 6k or should we apply jointly and risk getting turned down because of husbands defaults?

I'd apply on your own to be honest! My debt is 150% of my income so they will lend it to you!

You won't be able to determine the credit limit. They will choose that for you but when you apply it will ask you if you want to transfer balances. If you fill it in it may influence the limit they give you. When I applied for my Capital One card I wanted to transger about £10k and they gave me a limoit of £10,300! :D
