I am looking to buy a food mill or Mouli (are they the same thing?) for making my preserves. Trouble is there are so many different types and prices. Which is best - stainless steel or plastic; "cheap & replace sooner" or "more expensive & lasts longer" ?
Has anyone got any recommendations, and also which ones to avoid?

I only ever used a stainless steel one, but if I was buying a Mouli I dont think I would choose a plastic one.0

I bought a steel one in France last year. It's fantastic for doing soft fruit purees without gritty bits.I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.

I have a stainless steel one as well (easy, I live in France) and use it a lot - also for soups, pureeing things like kidney beans and tomatoes leaving the skins behind, and mashed potatoes.
My advice would be to buy stainless steel, as they are sturdier and don't mind the dishwasher - and buy a bigger rather than a smaller size. It is great to do a batch all in one go, rather than do half, clean out again then do the other half."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0 -
I have a stainless steel one and find it great ....have never seen a plastic one....mine wasn't very expensive anyway so I would say go for the stainless steel

Actually I bought mine in France even before moving here because it is not so easy to find them in the UK. I was determined to have one because my Mum already had one when I was small - she used it to make baby food then. Why not get one from the French Amazon? They sell the classic one - here's a link. You can find same ones in upmarket cook shops in the UK, but they won't be any cheaper....."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0 -
I bought mine a kitchen ware shop in Chatham and would live without it, its stainless steel has 3 different roller blades used regularly for cheese, carrots ad misc veg in bolognese.Think I paid under £10. A freind of mine bought hers in a market0

my mouli has a plastic surround, with stainless steel innards, interchangeable discs for hole size - had it 5-6 years, use it often, dishwashes fine. I'm wondering if a_sav and I have completely different products in our head as I don't think you could grate cheese and carrots in my mouli! My mum used to have a fab grater/mill which folded over a drum type affair and you turned a handle of the inner drum and it did fabulous long gratings.0

Thanks for that - your mouli sounds like the plastic one I have seen.
I also have two of those drum graters (I think they are Mouli too) - one is plastic surround, the other totally stainless steel. The plastic one is much easier and more comfortable to use - hence my OP about recommendations for a food mill.
OH is off to France next week - along with a printout of a Mouli and strict instructions not to come back without one.. :rotfl::rotfl:"Men are generally more careful of the breed(ing) of their horses and dogs than of their children" - William Penn 1644-1718
