I bought some chicken last week, and the eat by date was yesterday. I opened the pack, and the top smelt fine (Skinless chicken breasts x4) but the underneath of them smelt a bit eggy. I took them over to my brother, whos a chef, and he smelt them and said they 'were starting to go' but would be fine if i cooked them up then and ate them the next day.
Is this right? It feels a bit wrong cooking slightly gone off chicken, he said he'd smelt worse and theyd be fine. I was going to reheat them and stir them into a salad of some sort.

I'd never eat chicken that I suspected had gone off.
It's a worry if chefs think it's ok to cook bad chicken for restaurant customers." The greatest wealth is to live content with little."

he doesnt work in a restaurant. And im pretty sure when at work he wouldnt have chicken in that state.0 -
If as you say, the tops smelt ok and the smell was underneath where they've been enclosed and slight, I'd be inclined to rinse them well under a running tap, and use them. However, I would cook them very thoroughly , probably in some kind of casserole or something and eat them straight away. I say a casserole or curry or similar, cos psychologically, once I'd smelt that tainted smell, I don't think I could eat them 'au naturel' in a salad!
At the end of the day though, it's your shout, cos you can see and smell the chicken and we can't!0 -
My Mum used to make me eat past it's date chicken... whilst I've NEVER been able to stomach it since *gag* I really was never sick. As long as it's proper proper cooked you should be fine if you want to risk it. I reckon that if you couldn't smell it initially as you opened up the packet, you'll be fine.I love surprises!0

If the top was ok and the bottom wasn't, I'd suspect that it was the juices that were causing it, they tend to start smelling first. Wash the chicken and smell it again. If its ok then, I'd eat it.
Well, I wouldn't now, having gone vegan, but if I still ate meat I would!0 -
I too would give them a good rinse under cold running water it could be that they smell because they have sat in nasty plastic wrapping for too longBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I wouldn't eat it and would worry that a chef said it was ok to eat. If it smelled bad and was in date when you opened it you need to take it back to the shop and ask for it to be refunded.0

I wouldn't worry about something being past its sell by date but I would be worried if I thought it smelled funny.0

I would also wash and smell again. Often it is just the juices and the meat is fine, but if in doubt, don't. Off chicken will make you really ill. DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j
