when mortgage free...

I am mortgage free and I firmly believe that it is best kept to yourself. As a couple we are quite young (37 & 35)to be MF and we also have three children - so I don't think it's appropriate to tell our friends in similar positions whom are concerned about the cost of living and retaining their jobs.
Sometimes people may be direct and ask how much your mortgage is and I quote that I took a mortgage out for x amount - just a white lie but it normally ends the conversation there and then.
People can jump to a lot of assumptions if you tell them you are mortgage free and can also get quite jealous. Keep it to yourself and then you have to just worry about what you will do with your next pay packet - not what everyone else thinks about you.if i had known then what i know now0
