Payroll online

Am I correct in thinking that you can operate a payroll online through HMRC website? I know that there is software available that will allow you to file online.
What I am wondering is, is it worth buying software that is available on the HMRC website?
Has anyone had any experience of payroll software or online filing?

HMRC issues a CD rom to enable employers to operate PAYE, but this is not a true payroll progam as you still have to enter the details on a P11 working sheet because it does not save the details for each employee.
I have used payroll software and hated it, I think because I understand how PAYE works and I wanted to be sure that the underlying workings were correct - silly really. Payroll soft ware is more efficient, especially if you have a number of employees.
I have also files online and its a lot simpler than filling out P35's, etc - and it saves all your employee details.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -
How many employees do you have? I think that is the main question.
Payroll software is great thing - I work on one at my job, we have 110 employees.
Annual PAYE is filled via this system on-line.
P11D forms I prepare on the CD Rom that Fengirls mentioned and then post it to them. That CD rom is always good to have - it offers all sorts of forms and guidance...
The question you want yourself to ask is "is it cost efficient"??0 -
We use Sage payroll, I find it easy to use. I was never a great fan of online filing until I started to file our CIS returns online and realised just how easy it is - I still do it manualy as well just as a double check (well thats my excuse I'm abit like fengirl, having done it manualy for years I like to "see" whats going on, The software is NEVER wrong I hasten to add)
online filing will be a requirement soon though.Always get a Qualified opinion - My qualifications are that I am OLD and GRUMPY:p:p0 -
The CD ROM issued by HMRC will save employee details and will build up P11s during the year. Apparently it will be possible to file the P35 online from this program, too.
It will not print payslips, though, and I haven't checked but I doubt it can handle earnings attachments and similar complications. If it’s not important to you, don’t consume it0 -
I'd suggest you try www.moneysoft.co.uk - their payroll system is very good, dealing with all the online filing and also CIS. It costs around £50 plus vat per year which is A LOT cheaper than Sage or Quickbooks and is easier to use as well.
In my accounting practice, we do payroll for a few dozen clients and switched to moneysoft a couple of years ago after using Quickbooks and Sage prior to that - there's no comparison at all. Moneysoft has never let us down and is remarkably quick and easy to use.
No, I don't work for moneysoft and don't get any commissions - I just believe in recommending good software when I see it!0 -

My friend asked me to start doing his accounts, including payroll and I was looking at softwares (he is LTD company and I am used to softwares) and Sage was coming up quite expensive...
This is much cheaper. Do they also have accounts software? Something like Sage Line 50?0
