Indeed.
I saved 10k and paid off a 3k car loan in 14 months when I was saving for my deposit, when I was taking home £1450 a month. I did eff all for a year, stopped playing pool for my pub, sold my fancy car, ate crumpets for lunch every day (30p for 12), I even drove slower etc etc. It's doable if you're prepared to make sacrifices.
Todays FTB'r dont do sacrifices, want a semi in the best area, aint prepared to use 2nd hand furniture, stay at home till 30+ before buying.
Then complain they are disadvantaged cos they aint prepared well enough themselves.Official MR B fan club, dont go............................0 -
agree its doable but...if "Todays FTB'r dont do sacrifices," then how have do they have 50k deposits?Prefer girls to money0

Just my experiences of reading here and some of the young lads at work, the majority dont have deposits.
I got laughed out the control room at work last week, when i said we had a 2nd hand bed, setee and fridge when i first bought.Official MR B fan club, dont go............................0 -

if the majority don't have deposits I don't see how they are in a position to support the housing marketPrefer girls to money0 -
Experience is much more valuable imho. I left school at 15 with no qualifications and have since built my way up to a senior position within the IT industry. I have a great family, mortgage, holidays, beer money – couldn’t be happier.
Education has nothing to do with being able to buy a house.
Ah, University of Life, School of Hard Knocks etc etc. I see where you're coming from now. I've learnt not to bother debating with those from that mindset.
Many FTBers are disgruntled because the way house prices soared over the past x years has meant it seemed like it was hardly worth saving and sacrificing; however much you managed to put by each month was laughably insignifcant given the way properties were tripling in value every half an hour, or whatever it was. Such a divide is not healthy. I'm glad I gritted my teeth and did stick at saving at least 10% of my income each month though. They are an EYESORES!!!!0 -

Good luck for the future my friend. Hopefully one day you will take a risk and buy yourself a house instead of crying like a big baby.0 -
I'm just arranging a mortgage for a FTB who has saved £50,000. He is 28 now and on an average income.
Heck! £50k would have bought 2 of my parents houses outright! They only earned a few thousand less than me at the time (20 years ago) they bought it and I'm on a fairly good wage for the area I live in (poor former engineering town up t'North).
Now the same house would be nigh on £150k. Had my wage had a 6x increase I might be inclined to agree that house prices were fair. The fact is they haven't.
I'll gladly stop buying holidays abroad and use public transport to get a house etc... but even then I can barely touch the bottom of the rung. I don't mind hard but this is ridiculous!
But so long as those in a house find it's worth more this month, surely that's all that matters...?
(Incidentally, I am the same age as the FTB mentioned and have half of that saved. Currently residing in a static caravan!)0 -
