Can I cancel direct debit?

my own experince of HFC, they are money grabbing evil what nots, be very wary of them!!

Just phoned HFC, they had no record of receiving my cheque, but it was only posted on Saturday. The assistant said it could be there but details not updated on their system yet.
When I asked about cancelling the direct debit she said that would be OK and she would put a note on the screen stating the reason I had cancelled.
Immediately cancelled the DD with internet banking, but the instructions said if payment is due within next two days, telephone to be certain.
This I have just done, everything's sorted.

The salesman at Dixons added a Belkin router and laptop card at a very reduced price, so we agreed.

Unfortunately, checking Track & Trace at the Royal Mail website,and my online bank account, the payment doesn't seem to have been delivered yet!
It was posted on Saturday and the postman immediately put it in his sack. How long does first class recorded take?
