Importing Electrical good from the US Q's

I'm tempted to order a new mixer and deck package from the US. They are literally half the price over there, they even come with a voltage rectifier for free so i could run them on UK voltage.
I'm concerned about import tax. Does anyone have any experience in this process? for example, how do you work out what the tax will be, is it guarenteed to be applied or is there a chance the package could slip through?
