Microdermabrasion or medical microdermabrasion

I have had microdermabrasion at the salon a few times, my last visit was probably over two years ago, I then dropped that a just had facials.
Recently i have started to consider it again but wondered what is the difference between microdermabrasion and medical microdermabrasion.
Is there a difference, is there anything in particular that i should ask the dermatologist about the procedure? I am thinking of having it along with a non-ablative Elite laser treatment which i have discussed with the dermatologist.
I have had the laser treatment before but only after leaving the dermatologists office thought about the medical microdermabrasion.
I will discuss it with her when i go for the laser on Saturday but in the meantime if anyone knows what the difference is between the medical and non medical is I would be happy to hear from you.
