I read in one of the top cosmetic surgery websites that have a dental clinic in birmingham that they have a veneer that just goes on top of your tooth, nu veneer or something its called, would these last

Any dental restoration will last as long as it is done in the right situation.
The problem is there are loads of folks giving advice without looking at the person they are giving the advice too.
By that I mean anyone from the person in the street that has a crown and feels they now know everything there is to know about crowns, or a fashion magazine doing a double page spread on cosmetic dentistry.
3 people can come to me with the same complaint, eg an irregular tooth.
On 1 I may reshape it, either just by smoothing the shape, or bonding on some tooth coloured filling material.
On the next I may Veneer it
On the Last I may recommend a crown.

As they say it all depends.
I would be hesitant in veneering or crowning a tooth in someone who has a problem finding the furry end of the toothbrush
On the other hand if a tooth is heavily restored already then the crown might be the best bet.

Problems arise when folks go to see their dentist with a preconceived idea of what they need. In that situation the end result can be less than ideal as if you get focussed on option 1 when option 2 would be better then you can end up going down the wrong path.
This can even be personal to the dentist. Someone may be fantastic at one procedure. but slightly less so than another. You push for a) when the chappy does world class b) then end result will not be the best.

Essentially it all boils down to to talk to the dentist

I have spoken to my dentist, and I wanted advice about a specific issue: the scare factor of ''peg tooth'' in the proceedure.

I agree: noone here can possibly advise me what to do for my teeth, you are right :)

However, I was not asking really, for advice on that.

In anycase, I've definitely decided to leave it for a while. This might be the worng decision but so be it. I am NOT scared of the dentist or proceedures in anyway usually but the idea of inflicting damage on my teeth at this stage, even the ''dead'' one is too much for me. When it becomes mre unsightly I'll have to think again I suppose, but for now, this has put me off more than it has helped!

Thank you for your input everbody :)

I know internal whetening of the dead tooth has been mentioned and your dentist doesnt think it would be a good result. On the other hand I have had some fantastic results (although once I went too far and had to whiten the neighbouring teeth to match)
However if it gets a dark tooth to be less dark then the amount of preparation required to finish the job with a veneer is much less.
An ideal veneer prep can be less than 1mm, but if there is heavy staining then you may need to prep heavier. ALL veneer preps should stay within enamel though, Teeth shouldnt become pegs

A crown on the other hand you are talking a much greater loss of tooth structure, and they quite close to the peg you describe.
