MONEY MORAL DILEMMA. Would you sell a treasured trinket?

If I was that desperate and it was something I never wore then I would probably sell it if there was no other option. For me to be in this situation would require a lot of things in my life to change (eg. my parents, boyfriend, sister and friends would all have to be unable to lend me the money which would be very unlikely) and to be honest I hardly ever use the phone anyway.0

Yes, I would (and I have done, quite recently in fact).
In my case there was no other way, without getting into debt. As I hadn't worn the item in question for at least 15 years, I felt it was better to use it to get us out of a hole, rather than have it locked away. Had I worn it every day I may very well have thought differently.SMILE....they will wonder what you are up to...........;)0 -
No, absolutely not!
Consider your situation longer-term, rather than a quick-fix that won't last.
Selling treasured family heirlooms is hardly the solution to your problems, is it? If the watch was of no sentimental value to you, then OK, but even then it's not providing you with a long-term solution. What happens next time you can't meet a payment? WHY are you not meeting your payments?
If you're regularly finding yourself behind with payments you need to rethink your lifestyle and your finances. Move to a cheaper flat, change your phone tariff, cut back on alcohol, take a Saturday job... don't flog your 21st birthday presents.0 -
Been there, done that; although in my case it was a pair of technics turntables. It was around 1996 when I had dreams and ambitions and a hefty phone bill after discovering the internet. I really didn't want to part with them but couldn't see any other way to raise the money.
I sold up, paid up and moved on, changed jobs several times until I got one with an employer who was willing to pay for me to do a part-time degree (and I got a 1st :j).
Along the way I also ditched my telco, learned to budget and discovered this website so next time I might hesitate but would no doubt do the same again. Sometimes a long term solution has to start today :think:0 -
The key is in the word 'treasured'. I've done this in the past for some ready money and regretted it. Besides, you rarely get the retail value and you certainly don't get the sentimental value.
So I would look at all other options - short term loan, car boot sale etc. But also you need to take a hard look at why it is 'treasured'. Sometimes we hang onto things without much thought.and if the object is a crutch, there may be alternatives.0 -
I'm not keen on jewellery, so I probably would sell it (my DH thinks it's great - he doesn't have to spend a fortune on 'bling' for me!)0

I'm not really keen on jewellery either - I don't know what to do with it! But the only valuable piece of jewellery I have is one my mother gave to me. I had no idea it was actually set with real gemstones until I'd come back from a concert and my mum said she was a bit concerned that I might have lost it in a mosphit :0
It turns out it was my grandmother's, whom I'd never met but she told me I do resemble, and get my writing and Star Trek obsession from her (she also named me)))
But no, I wouldn't sell it. I'd have to exhaust all other options and there's too many for me to be able to resort to selling.~ R.I.P Heath Ledger, George Carlin, Stan Winston ~

No, I wouldn't sell it, but I would Pawn it - that way, you get cash in hand, and can pay the money back when you can afford it! Easy!0

Yes - I have done this. I had a credit card which I wanted to pay off. I had been left some jewellery by relatives but it was not my style. I sold it at auction and paid off the credit card and had enough left to buy myself am item of jewellery more my style which will always remind my of the practical way in which my relatives helped me out of a tight spot. If it is a family treasure and you have someone to leave it to then I would think again but I have no children so it wasn't an issue for me.0
