2 jobs tax

Hi

I have just started a new job where I only work as and when Im needed. I also work 8 hours a week in a job i have had for a long time. In my first job I have never paid tax because I am on a very low income. My new boss wants to put me on a BR code because it is my second job. However being on the BR code would make working there pointless because my income is so low through both jobs.

How do I go about telling the tax office this and is she entitled to put me on the BR code?

Sorry if that sound muddled
thanks

Your boss has to put you on code BR as these are his instructions from HMRC.
You need to ring the tax office which deals with this new employer (as I dont think your present employer will have notified the tax office you work for them as you are below the taxable limit). Have your Ni number with you.
Explain the situation and ask them to issue a code number to the new employer which is made up of your personal allowance (6475) less whatever your pay is at the other job. This will leave you with net allowances to set against this job.
This employer will refund any tax overpaid once they receive a copy of the new notice of coding.

  • When I first started my present job i was emergency taxed and filled in a p46 so the company did notify them that i work there.

The new job will be taxed at BR unless they are told differently by the tax office. How much will you be earning in this job. You can earn about £125 per week before paying tax. The extra tax can be reclaimed at the end of the year or you could ask the tax office to split your allowance between the two jobs.
