dept help - especially mbna

I recently changed jobs, and after 6 weeks into my new job, have been made redundent. no problem i thought as my payment protection insurance will pay out on my loans and cards.
I phoned insurance company to make a claim, only to be told because there was a gap of more than 2 weeks between jobs i am not covered and they are not going to pay.
I got a bit behind when i was between jobs on my credit cards, because i missed one payment, the card companies were asking for a lot more than reasonable
e.g. MBNA wanted £700 in over a 6 week period, and sent letters and statements almost every other day.
when i started my most recent job, i was getting back to normal, then i was made redundant, and with no insurance, I cannot afford to pay them.
I phoned Goldfish, explaining the situation, and told them i wanted to pay £10.00 per month for the next 3 months and could they freeze the interest, while i looked for another job. No problem came the reply, "i'll sort that for you although it will be on your credit history". (which is fair enough)
I phoned Mbna, and explained the situation, and explained how helpfull goldfish had been, could she do the same. " i am going to need your assets and expenditures details" was the reply. Okay I will work out every penny this weekend and will call her on monday.
Earlier this week i get a call from a debt collection company, chasing the arrears on my mbna card, i told them i would send them money and they were happy (this was before i knew the insurance wouldnt payout)
They called again this morning and i chose to ignore it, until i sort things out with mbna, and then my phone rang again at 6.55pm it was the debt collection agency
who the hell calls someone at five to seven on a saturday night chasing money
( i answered call, but they took too long to reply, so i hung up)
Has anyone got any advice on how to deal with idiots?
thanks

Hi
Sorry that you are having really bad luck at the moment. My advice would be, stop, take a deep breath and work out exactly what you owe - secured, unsecured debts. Look at your present income - whether it is JSA or nothing whilst you look for other work, then look at your monthly expediture.
Once you have an idea of all that, ring CCCS or Payplan (the links to these organisations are on this site and they have their own websites too) and ask their advice. It might be an idea to start a debt management plan (DMP) where you only pay what you can afford and with the support of CCCS or Payplan - they will help negociate with your creditors for lower monthly payments and hopefully interest to be stopped.
Search this forum as people are often talking about claiming charges back from these credit companies (something I have to try myself). So that might help recover some of the money - it is a bit of a David and Golliath situation but it would be good to retaliate to these money giants!
As to the harrassing phone calls - tell the creditor, in writing, send by recorded delivery (so that they cannot deny receiving it) that your circumstances have changed and you request for your telephone number to be removed from their database and all communication to be only in writing.
If that fails, there is a brilliant suggestion from a forum member called "Harassed" on:
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=159895
where they have a legal and strongly worded letter to deal with creditors who persist in harrassing phone calls which looks asthough it will do the trick.
Hope that helps and good luck!0 -
Thanks to both of you for replying and your for your advice, and i'll check out those links0
