Tax Messed Up...

Please bear wth me...I'm not great with tax-type stuff!!!

I work for a council on a temporary contract which keeps being extended. Someone in H.R. or payroll messed up at the end of February and didn't 'recognise' that my contract had been extended for another 3 months. The first I knew about it was when I got a P45 rather than a payslip.

They then made an emergency advance to replace my missing March pay. It got better though. On my April pay they deducted the advance they'd paid me, but still didn't pay me March's pay so I got £15 in my pay. Another advance followed!

Anyway, I've just got my May payslip which has both May and the missing March pay on it. Problem being that I've 'lost' my tax-free allocation from March, so the tax showing is about £100 too much. I also haven't received a P60.

My boss has been onto payroll who say that as this concerns the last tax year (March '09), I'll have to sort it with the tax office, and it's not their problem. Payroll are going to send me a P60 letter(?) proving my contributions, then I'll have to sort it out with the tax office to get a refund.

Does the above sound about right? It's just major annoying that it's someone else's screw up that I'll have to sort. Finally, what is the procedure for getting a tax refund?...just discuss it over the phone, fill in a form etc.? Never had to do anything like this before.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Nice to save.

Yes, what they are saying is correct. Your employer cannot go back to 08-09 as this year is now closed. You will need to send the P60 to your tax office with a covering letter setting out all your employers for the y/e 5/4/09 and asking them to check for a refund. No forms required, but a 10 week wait Im afraid.
