Put some washing up liquid directly onto the stain, hold it tight and scratch it in gently with a fingernail. Make sure to scratch both ways, warp and weft of the fabric and it should start to shift. Wipe it off and repeat depending on the stain. I have used this loads of times, it shifts oil, biro, felt tip, ink and grease. Then just wash as usual. The only fabric you can't do it with is silk types, as it disturbs the finish.
