    Playing complete devils advocate here...but I wonder if he feels really overwhelmed by it all (being made redudant etc) and is doing something that he feels *able* to cope with as a starting point perhaps??

    Maybe you could sit down tonight and talk about strategies for applying for benefits etc and show him what needs doing first :o, he might just want a bit of help but not want to ask you for it??
