Dressmaking book help please

Options
Hey all

This is kinda OS but feel free to move if I've posted in wrong place!

I need some help with choosing a birthday present for a friend. She keeps mentioning wanting to make her own clothes but has no designs to follow for the right shapes etc.

So can anyone recommend a good book that I can buy her for her birthday that has all the basics? Under £20, and modern not old-fashioned outfits (she can be fussy ;)).

TIA

with sewing books, the old fashioned, detailed ones tend to be the best - with sewing you tend to have to look past the ghastly fabrics they use on the mock-ups, and look more at the shape. There isnt such a thing as old fashioned patterns, you just get creative and change a bit here and there, to suit your own style. Because tbh a Tshirt is a Tshirt, its just how you get creative with fabrics and embellishment that gives it 'style'

The case being Kwiksew - do great books, that have all the basic items you would need to create a wardrobe of clothes, but the pictures on the pattern covers, are so OTT and gaudy, that you wouldnt want to make anything resembling them

Another good book ive found is 'Sew What! skirts' - as it give information on drafting your own patterns, to make lots of different styles

Sew What - Skirts is good but my favourite book ever is 'Yeah! I made it myself' by Eithne Farry, not to everyone's taste though.

Thanks both. I'll have a look at those.

My friend is very into fashion, which is why as said modern, but as long as a good variety of shapes of skirts/tops are in the book it doesn't matter.

How about a 6 month subscription to sew today, or something along those lines?
