Any advice?

An old NatWest Account has come back to haunt me. I was in dispute with them re. their vicious charging policy. I would have money on a savings account and a direct debit would come into the current account but at the time there would not be enough money on the account to cover it. So instead of just doing an internal transfer (after all what do we pay bank charges for!) they would prefer to bounce the direct debit and charge £30 for it. We had many a heated argument on phone about it. Then I moved and simply forgot about it! The account was transferred to debt collectors who have managed to trace me to my current address. I phoned them up to try and sort out a repayment schedule - the debt is for about £400 and they are trying to impose on me the amount they want me to pay, in this case £100 a month for the next 4 months. I am just coming out of years of debt and I do not want to go back there by trying to meet monthly payments of £100 along with all my other living expenses. Are they allowed to bully like this. The other thing they asked for was a budget to prove I couldn't pay this amount every month. I thought I would send them a very basic list of my salary and then another column showing all my monthly outgoings. Do I have to give them employer details etc.
Any advice would be very welcome!

i may not have entirely understood, but if the debt is mainly due to bank charges then i would suggest you read the following and reclaim the charges. When you write to the bank copy the letter to the DCA explaining you are disputing the debt.

you need to register, which is free
then go to forums
look down the list and find libraries
and

obviously keep copies of everything you write and send by recorded delivery.0 -
Hi Financial Phoenix,
It sounds like you should totally reclaim your bank charges. Considering it's been some time since you were charged, and if it gets to the stage of you issuing a small claim against them in the county court (aka "small claims court") you can add 8% interest, so it may turn out they actually owe YOU money(Cue your right to start sending them nasty letters hehe)
Well worth investigating heh. Good luck0
