heard martin on radio 2 today nvery good as ever
what i cant understand is why LPG for the car is never mentioned
ok so it does cost £750-1500 to have the conversion done
but current LPG price is 40-45p a litre...
we paid our conversion back in just over a year and that was 5 years ago...

I'm intrigued. How much of your boot space is taken up with the tank, and does it return the same MPG as normal unleaded? It always seems to good to be true.0

As more people switch to LPG, the price will rocket anyway.

I think LPG is one of these things thats you have to actually drive the miles to justify the cost of the change over. And of course its still not as freely avaliable as normal fuel which hinders its popularity too.
And although its cheaper, I was under the impression the mpg is not quite as good? Though I could be wrong there!0 -

I thought some time ago this subject was raised, if I’m right the fact that LPG is less efficient that petrol, so Litre for Litre you have to use more LPG for the same mileage?!!!!!!There are More Questions Than Answers!!!!!!
:search: But I Just Don't Have Any Answers :idea:0 -
Hi
Older LPG systems did tend to lose some MPG (about 10%), but the lower price more than compensates. The newer ones are better.
In the budget the Government lowered the duty on LPG by 1p per litre and guaranteed not to increase it by more than 1p per year for the next 3 years. The main reason that LPG is cheaper is because the Government takes so little duty from it. That means that it will be cheap for the next 3 years at least.
It's worth considering the additional benefits too - particularly the fact that it's a much cleaner fuel, so less wear on the engine. My oil comes out the same colour that it goes in!
As far inconvenient tanks, talk to a fitter. You can have a tank where the spare wheel goes or sometimes put underneath the car.
My LPG conversion is relatively old, not very well done and has a huge tank in the boot, but I wouldn't change it for anything else that wasn't LPG powered!0 -
one question if the tank goes where the spare wheel is where does the spare wheell go ? what do you do if you have a blow out ....If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

some answers:
Do LPG tanks have to be in the car? No
My LPG tank replaces my petrol tank, a new small petrol tank holding about 18 litres was then fitted. LPG cars start on petrol. Also in some systems there is no guage for the lpg so I tend to run until i run out and then run a few miles till I fill up.
has the price rocketted Yes from a low of 30p to a high of 45p normally 38-40p; over the last few months it has risen to a low of 40p to a high of 48p, normally 42-44p. big deal when compared to 90p+ for petrol
Efficiency: i find that LPG and petrol when I run on it seems fairly similar, at he price difference above even 10% (and i would be amazed if it was that) it is still a hefty saving
It is much greener which pleases me but frankly if the economics werent right I probably wouldnt drive it
Availability: total myth that there is none - absurd. You do have to keep an eye open, but there is a website (http://www.boostlpg.co.uk/) which gives you a full list. there is a special map (£5) which has all the stations on them. After a bit you know where there are good (cheap) spots. bristol cribbs causeway is a good one. There is a patch around shepton mallet which is very low on stations, but I have a 300 mile range so having been caught out here, I just think a bit if I am running around and fill up at Taunton or Bristol - but that is an unusual situation
Europe: I drove to the Czech republic last year going into France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Poland. Found fuel in all of these BUT if going again I would take a list, definitely in Germany. Poland was cheapest, so was Belgium - worth getting through France to fill up in Belgium and definitely come back with a full tank. met a German who had just got his car converted in Poland and after talking with him i might well consider a Polish holiday/conversion for my next car.
To sum up, I am in my 6th year with my people carrier and wouldn't drive anything else. I have had one further bill for £250 for new valves in that time. About once a year my converter looks it over and tweaks it for a couple of hours. :rotfl: I do about 20k a year . Indeed for the smaller car, when we had one the first thing i did was talk to my converter about what model/make to get so that he could convert...
why pay double?0
