Yes - but since when have the people who enforce that had the proper equipment to disprove the claims properly?
It could be that these cells are designed so that they can have ONE charge of that capacity, but they are so compromised by the attempt to give them such high capacity that thereafter they perform much worse than cells of a lower nominal capacity. That doesn't break the trades descriptions act.
Or the cells could have a much higher internal resistance than those of a lower capacity. This means that if you discharge them slowly enough, they will perform to specification, but if you use them in any real world applications such as in a digital camera or MP3 player, the capacity drops right off because much of the energy just heats up the battery. This doesn't break the trades description act either, because the conditions under which the batteries are specified are not given.
Or it could be that the cells have a high self-discharge rate, so if you charge them and immediately discharge them very quickly, they will give the stated capacity, but again, in any real-world situation they won't. Again, the description is not inaccurate; merely misleading.
My Olympus camera came with a set of Olympus-branded AA cells of 1800mAh stated capacity. I have a set of Uniross 2100mAh cells which are newer. The Olympus ones always last longer than the Uniross ones - I might forget which set is in the camera, but after a while I know because it goes on and on with the Olympus cells.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0 -
The same happens with speed figures for memory cards by they way - they are all measured in different ways, so comparing them is fairly meaningless.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0
