Tax code seems right but paying too much tax?!

in Cutting tax
Hi,
My wife works a part time job as a carer and has been working at a care home for nearly 3 months now. On inspecting this months payslip it seems she has paid too much tax. She works 22 hours a week at £6.05 an hour and her tax code is 647L. She gets paid four weekly.
According to listentotaxman.com she should be paying £6.80 tax and £10.21 NI every four weeks.
Aprils pay was correct according to that website and she paid the correct amount of tax but in May she paid the right amount of NI but over £50 in tax, that's £40ish more than she should have.
Is there any reason that you can think of why this would happen? Seems strange to pay the right amount one month and then the next it's different even though the tax code is exactly the same.
Any help would be appriciated.

Agree this looks wrong. What week numbers are showing on her April and May payslips?
If she has to launder her own uniform and supply safety footwear, her code number is wrong, she needs to claim the fixed rate expense allowance for nurses (£80 I think).£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -
Marchs Payslip Wk52 (BR)
Aprils Payslip shows Wk4 (647L)
Mays Payslip shows Wk8 (647L)
We haven't had the emergency tax refunded from March yet either...
She's a carer not a nurse, does that make a difference?
Thanks0 -

Perhaps you could give the exact figures as they are on April and May's payslip - then it can be checked. We haven't had the emergency tax refunded from March yet either...
You won't get an automatic refund as it's a different tax year. Once your wife gets her P60 she can apply to HMRC for a refund of any overpaid tax last tax year. She's a carer not a nurse, does that make a difference?
Possibly. Is she required to wear a uniform with a logo?0 -

Not to the tax. Unless claiming uniform allowances (ie washing uniform at home...)
don't post 'months' if she is paid four weekly - she is paid in lunar months then - ie 13 times a year so her tax allowance will be 6475/13 so the first £498 is free of tax
having processed your figures I make her tax about £6.86 per payslip too (gotta love excel)
suggest she takes it up with the bods who produce her payslip.
has she got her P60 from last year yet? Do you have the address of the tax office her employers are registered with?Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily Dickinson

What is her taxable figure and YTD figures for gross pay, and tax on payslip 4 and 8?0

Thanks for the posts, I'm at work so haven't got the exact figures on hand but i'll put them up later and hopefully we can understand what is going on.
She receieved two P60s one from her previous employer and one from her current employer, not sure if she has the address of the tax office or not. I'll have to ask her.
She was on Maternity leave most of last year, last tax year she was on Maternity Allowance from April - August, then employed part time from Aug-March09 then with her current employer from March09 - to date0 -

Any Ideas?!0 -
The year to date for week 4 is 639.77 and for week 8 it is 1408.88 this is an increase of 769.11. Wage for week 8 was 532.41 which leaves 236.70 unaccounted for. This is what is causing the tax increase. At some point between these wages being processed this 236.70 gross was added to the records.
Was any payment of this amount made without tax being deducted, or was this earned elsewhere this tax year and a P45 sent to tax office?
If you do not recognise the amount then it needs to be queried with payroll dept. it has been known for details to be put on the wrong person's records.0 -

Ah yes, I never even registered that was the problem. Nothing should have been added because she just worked her normal 4 weeks and that was it. Haven't got a clue why an extra £236 would be added.
I'll ask the wife to query it with her payroll department. Thanks for the help.0
