my mum dribbled some hot butter from her crumpets on to her top which is 100% cotton. she has washed in plain soap and water and nothing, then she tried running an iron over it with brown paper in hope that would soak it up, but no nothing has worked, does anyone have any suggestions?

Try rubbing washing detergent into the stain on both sides. Then wash again - so long as the heat that's already been applied hasn't "set" the stain, that ought to remove it
Alternatively, this older thread may help - Grease on clothes. I'll merge the threads later.

Hi homealone.
If you squirt a small blob of washing up liquid directly onto the stain and rub it in, then wash in the normal way that should sort it out.
There are more ideas on this thread:
Help - Grease on clothes
I'll add your post to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

Hi,
I'm always having trouble with grease stains on clothes and got sick of buying grease removal products that don't work. Anyway I checked on the internet last week when my husband spilled a load of fat over his new shorts when cooking a roast dinner and I found some advice that said to use cola. So I did - I soaked it in the cola for 10 minutes or so and then washed it in the machine. Some of the stubborn stains needed another dose after the first wash but now they're all gone - it was amazing.0 -
wd40 works for me just give the stain a light squirt leave for 5 mins and then wash as normal.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
