Defaults at 6 years

I've just got a credit report and have 3 defaults on there. I understand that defualts can come off after 6 years but they all seem to have different date data.
I have a default for HSBC with a Date Satisfied of 29/08/2000 but a Date updated of 31/01/2002.
I have a default for Orange with a Date updated of 03/07/2001 but a Default Date of 24/08/2000.
And I have a default for Barclays with a Date updated of 11/04/2001 but a with a Date Satisfied of 30/06/2000.
My questions are
1) Which date does the 6 years start from in each three cases ?
2) After the six years do the Defaults disappear ? Stay on but are not included in a credit score, or do I have to write to the relevant companies to request they be taken off ?
Many thanks for any advice....

I'd like to know on this too as I've got one like this - defaulted in 00 but updated in 02.
I do know that the default automatically after 6 years from the default date but I don't know what difference the update makes.0 -

The default date is the date the six years will start ticking from
The update is usually when the firm who set the default have looked at your file or checked your address - it doesnt make any difference to the default date
What sets the clock ticking again is a payment made or you writing to the firm to acknowledge the debt on a dormant default
A friend of mine had a default for £100 that was coming up to 6 years old and shed paid nothing on it. Just before the 6 years were up she got some bonus from work and decided to clear the debt so "shed feel better"
Guess what - the file now shows "settled " and the date has been reset to 2005 when she paid ! - which means it'll be on her file as a settled default until 2011
Be warned! The more you learn the less you know
The less you find out as you go0 -
Right...some food for thought! Thanks for that.PMA - Positive Mental Attitude

This is where I've got a problem. The HSBC and Barclays are settled. However according to the report the one for Orange is Status defaulted but I know I paid this. I have spoken to Orange and they said as far as they are concerned the debt is cleared and if I write to them with a copy of the report they will update it.0
