Can any of this be saved?

I just discovered that my fridge is unusually warm...20c to be exact. I don't know when it broke down, but I suspect it was sometime yesterday.
I did a large food shopping 3 days ago so my fridge is pretty full... I'm not even sure what I can save.
My hubby is on his way home with a fridge now

Can I save this?
12 pint of Milk (unopened)
large block of cheese (vacuum packed )
2 medium blocked sizes of cheese, wrapped in clingfilm
Large glass jar of mayo (opened)
Vacuum packed meatballs
Single cream (unopened)
Soy sauce
lemon juice (squeeze bottle)
Strawberry Jam in glass jar (opened)
Colemans mustard (opened glass jar)
Ketchup bottle (opened)
10 egg
Carton of OJ (opened)
12 Small pots of yogurt

This I already chucked out
Ham (opened)
Liver pate (opened)
sausage rolls

The only way to check the milk is to open and sniff. If its still fine and hubby is going to be a while empty some of the contents out of your freezer and put the milk and other perishables in there. If you dont have a fridge do the old way and fill a bucket with cold water and immerse the milk in there. You could do the same will the yoghurts, cream and cheese if you can pack them in waterproof containers

The meatballs and mayonnaise will be fine as I store my mayonnaise out of the fridge all the time and it never comes to any harm. The meatballs are vacuum packed so they will be fine as long as the vacuum hasnt been damaged

    Hi greenpixey,

It's very hard to tell without seeing/smelling/tasting the food, but here are my thoughts.

milk, cheese, meatballs, cream, yoghurts.....these will all probably be fine but if you sniff them and if they smell ok then taste them. If they taste ok then I wouldn't have a problem using them. Like ravylesley says try to get them chilled soon and use them as soon as possible.

mayo, soy sauce, lemon juice, jam, mustard, ketchup, eggs, and orange juice will certainly be ok to use.

Did you check the things you threw out? I would have kept them all if they looked, smelt and tasted ok.

I'll add this to the Quick Questions on food safety / sell by / use by dates thread later.

Some people store eggs out of the fridge anyway so they'll be fine. Like the other poster said, the milk is probably the only thing that needs checking and a quick sniff will soon tell you if it's ok!

The yogurts will have blown their lids upwards if they've gone off.

I'm glad I asked now. I was nearly in tears here thinking I might have to throw it all out and worrying about the cost of replacement
Thank you, thank you, thank you :kisses3:

    Hi Pixie

I hope you got everything safely into the fridge. IMHO the cheese can all be grated or sliced and frozen, we keep all our sauces and jams in the larder - so the ketchup, mustard, jam etc will be fine.

Check on the use by dates on the eggs - if you are in doubt there is a thread here somewhere about how to know if an egg is fresh without cracking it open - one of the mods can help you find it.

milk, cream, yogurts have to be sniffed and if they smell ok - tasted. You may wish to cook with the cream - just to be on the safe side. Usually when these things are getting towards the use by stage - the tops on the pots swell up.

As for the meatballs - what is the sell by date - how cold are they, this may be the most difficult to check. If in doubt - cook one or two thoroughly and taste cautiously.

Me and my OH have cast iron stomachs - but not everyone is like that

If you have some freezer boxes or bags you can put some ice blocks in the bottom and that will keep things cool if you cant fit them in the freezer. Hopefully you will have manged to save all the stuff by now.
