Request to Welcome Finance

Hi- Last Friday-( 22nd) I hand delivered a letter to Welcome Finance requesting that they request the direct debit one day later ( i.e tomorrow) as with bank holiday wages dont go in until tomorrow. Been with them 2 years- always paid by direct debit every month- up to date with payments.

Today I look at my bank statement online and see they have debited it today- which will mean a £25 charge. How do I stand with this? I was tempted to pay by cheque this month and cancel my direct debit fir this month but decided it was easier ti ask them to take it out a day later. Can I claim the £25 back or for next month deduct £25 off my direct debit . Have heard bad press about welcome. Be grateful for any suggestions
Thanks Julie

What may have happened is that, through no fault of your own, your didn't give them enough notice.
Again, because of the bank holiday, the letter probably wouldn't have been dealt with until Tuesday and they tend to request payment a couple of days before it is actually paid.
It could be worth seeing if they will pay the charge, but I wouldn't hold your breath! Or you could ask the bank if they will not charge the £25 fee, if you explain why it has happened (not in too much detail though!)
    Finally dealing with our debts.

I think a DD request is put in from your creditor to your bank 3 working days before the transaction. Like Elsas mamma said I expect they did not have enough time to process your letter and cancel the request. If you had tried to cancel the DD with your bank they may also have told you it was too late.

Whether Welcome would have been prepared to take the DD a day late if they had had enough notice is another issue.

Sometimes it can be better to have a standing order set up as I believe you can cancel that with just 1 days notice, and you are more in control.

Your bank may refund the fee (at my bank, HSBC, I was told that the in branch staff have the authority to refund a fee once in a 6month period).

Go into your bank and explain it is an error and you are protected byt the direct debit guarantee they should refund as the charge is unlawful. I would stop paying them by direct debit, i had lots of trouble with it and them and reading the forums so have many others. Best bet is set up a standing order in future that way you control how much goes out and when. Give welcome a call and get their bank details and set it up. If you have telephone or internet banking it is super easy to set up standing orders. Direct debits are so easy to lose control of especially with bank holidays etc. Standing orders are a safer way of keeping control on your money in my opinion
